Trout opener, tradition filled with memories
When Governor Jay Nixon decided to attend Monday’s trout opener at Montauk State Park, he did it for the fishing, not just the politics.

Nixon was among many dignitaries to attend the opener. Also on the guest list were new Department of Conservation Director Bob Ziehmer and Department of Natural Resources Director Mark Templeton. State Representative Jason Smith (R-Salem) and State Senator Frank Barnitz (D-Lake Spring) were also on hand, as was 76-year Montauk angler Ted Ziske of Salem, who provided the countdown before Nixon fired the pistol that started another year of trout fishing.
